the flash season 2 episode 23

The second season of The CW's superhero TV series "The Flash" has explored a distant parallel dimension and tried to connect it to the already existing universe that we know from the show's beginning. The viewers were introduced to the characters' alternate versions of themselves in another plane of existence, including "The Flash" himself, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). However, as Team Flash found new friends in an alternate world, they have also encountered a diabolical character that threatens to destroy both versions of Earth. In the upcoming season finale, Barry will face the reigning big villain Zoom (Teddy Sears) once and for all to bring justice to the latter's victims.

Barry has been through a lot of suffering in Season 2, with the previous episode being the climax of all his pain this season. To recap the previous episode, Team Flash has not stopped looking for ways to defeat Zoom, and Barry has to increase his speed even more if he ever wants the villain to pay for his crimes. Unfortunately for the hero, Zoom wanted him to learn a painful lesson. The villain abducted Barry's father, Henry Allen, to scare off the protagonists. As Barry appears determined to take him down no matter what, Zoom killed Henry in front of his son.
The death of Barry's father is expected to make his character even darker. The premise of the show's first season saw a young Barry witnessing his mother's death. Also, Barry spent most of his life looking for ways to bring his father out of prison as he was convicted for his wife's murder. With the recent developments in the show, Barry just lost another loved one in front of him, and the character is expected to grow darker but tougher in the next chapters to come.
If anything, Henry's death would only make Barry more determined to make Zoom pay for his crimes. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "The Flash" Season 2 showrunner Aaron Helbing said that Barry would be stronger this time in the face of a harrowing tragedy, and his pain would only motivate him to do everything in his power to take down Zoom.
"After finally learning Zoom's real plan, Barry embarks on the race of his life to try and stop Zoom once and for all," Helbing said.
Helbing also revealed that Barry will use the techniques Zoom has taught him when the latter was still pretending to be the kind-hearted friend and mentor from Earth 2, Jay Garrick. Zoom's facade as Barry's teacher aims to make The Flash of Earth 1 faster, and after Barry has succeeded, Zoom will steal Barry's speed force, making him the fastest being in both Earths.
On the other hand, Gustin said in an interview with TV Line (via IBTimes) that his character Barry would learn more from his challenges in life and stay positive as always.

"The thing about Barry Allen, The Flash is he is a very optimistic character and his kind of way of life is to keep moving forward and to stay as positive as possible and I wouldn't imagine we're gonna lose that. I think it'll be harder for him going into season 3, but I think we'll still see Barry fighting for his optimism and trying to move on."
